Still Old School

Havre Beneath the Streets

Havre, Montana

History underground. Water runs downhill. You see the problem.

The Story

Guided tours of Havre's underground, run by a nonprofit and open year-round. The office is on Third Avenue, next to the free railway museum.

Havre Beneath the Streets runs guided tours of the town’s underground out of an office on Third Avenue. It’s a nonprofit, and it isn’t state- or county-funded. It lives on ticket sales and donations, stays open year-round, and keeps the Frank DeRosa Railway Museum free.

The trouble with history underground is that water runs downhill. Heavy rains have flooded the block of Third Avenue, First Street and Second Avenue again and again in recent years, and tours had to shut down five times during the 2025 peak season alone to dry out and clean up. In August 2025 the staff asked locals to buy tickets, for now or for later, or to donate.

Call for tour times, then go down and see what Havre kept. Your ticket does more good than you’d think.

Why It's Still Old School

A Hi-Line town that kept its basement history and gives tours of it, rain permitting. Lately the rain has had a lot to say about the permitting.
