Reynolds Market
Not every grocery store gets a dance for its birthday.
The Story
Family-owned eastern Montana grocery that opened in Glendive in 1925 and turned 100 in 2025. Four stores left: Glendive, Sidney, Baker and Glasgow.
It opened on Bell Street the same day the founder's son was born, let people buy on account through the Depression, and is still family-owned 100 years later.
F.T. Reynolds opened the first Reynolds on Bell Street in Glendive on March 21, 1925, the same day his son Paul was born. Busy day. He had come to Montana in 1909 and learned the trade driving deliveries and clerking at other stores.
The chain spread to Baker, Glasgow, Beach, Circle, Richey, Wibaux, Terry and Miles City. Fire took the Wibaux store in 1929 and the Glendive store in 1932. Through the Depression, Reynolds let customers buy on account, sometimes getting paid twice a year, and took farm produce as payment. John Marman, a Hungarian immigrant, managed Reynolds stores for nearly 50 years.
Four stores remain: Glendive, Sidney, Baker and Glasgow. The Miles City store closed in January 2025. The company marked its 100th year with events in each town, including a community dance in Glendive. Not every grocery store gets a dance for its birthday.
