Still Old School

Kalispell Grand Hotel

Kalispell, Montana · Since 1912

Eight downtown hotels once. One left.

The Story

Kalispell had eight downtown hotels in its early days. The Grand, opened in 1912, is the one still renting rooms on Main Street.

The Kalispell Grand opened in 1912: three stories of brick, designed by architect Marion Riffo, for travelers willing to pay extra for running water and a lock on the door. Luxury had a lower bar back then.

Early Kalispell had eight downtown hotels. This is the only one still operating.

A big renovation started in 1989 and turned the bath-down-the-hall rooms into rooms with their own baths. Guests came back in 1991. The lobby kept the oak stairway and the pressed-tin ceiling.

Take the oak stairs at least once. They’ve been waiting since 1912.

Why It's Still Old School

On Main Street since 1912, with the oak stairway and pressed-tin ceiling still in the lobby. The bath is in the room now, which counts as progress.
