The Western Cafe

Still Old School Montana Original

Bozeman's longest-running restaurant on East Main, serving diner breakfast and lunch since 1933.

Counter breakfast on East Main since 1933. Scratch cooking, no laptop culture, chicken fried steak that regulars still order.

This place is still going.

The Western Cafe holds the title of Bozeman’s longest-running restaurant, according to a December 2024 Bozeman Magazine profile. The building at 443 East Main has been serving meals since 1933, and possibly earlier under earlier names the magazine lists as The Eat a Bite, the Nickel Lunch, and the Cottage Cafe.

Sue Sabena took over in 2008 with her daughter Julie Gandulla. The magazine interview describes scratch cooking, local eggs, and a room where phones and laptops are not the point. Chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy show up as regular orders. The cafe was still operating when that piece ran in late 2024.

Bozeman changed fast around it. The Western kept the breakfast job. If you are nearby, stop in and keep them busy.
