Matt's Place
Historic Butte drive-in on Placer Street, open since 1930, back serving burgers and shakes after a multi-year closure.
Montana's early drive-in habit, still in the same building. Burgers, shakes, and a counter that came back.
This place is still going.
Matt’s Place is the lunch counter a lot of Butte people mean when they talk about an old drive-in. National Register writeups and local coverage place the opening in 1930 and call it likely the first drive-in in Montana. The building still sits on Placer Street near the interstate.
The place closed in 2021 after the previous owner’s death and sat quiet for years. In late October 2025, new owners Daniel Lee and Lyndee Elmer reopened it, bringing back burgers, fries, and shakes. NBC Montana and Montana Right Now reported Thursday-through-Monday hours, roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the couple staffed up.
Continuous operation was interrupted. The building and the menu people remember are back. That is enough for Still Old School, with the gap noted honestly. If you are nearby, stop in and keep them busy. Remember this place? Tell us what you remember from before the closure.
