Remember This? Bert and Ernie's in Helena

Bert and Ernie’s was one of those Helena rooms that doubled as a map. Meet you at Bert and Ernie’s meant you would find each other without a pin drop.

Montana Free Press and NBC Montana reported the closing after 48 years, with the final night on December 1, 2022. Tom McCarvel and Tim Kennedy started the restaurant in 1974. Toby DeWolf later owned and ran the Last Chance Gulch location for decades, expanding sections inside the old Globe clothing store building he bought in 1987 after earlier years in the Iron Front Hotel.

Coverage at closing listed the ordinary pressures without dressing them up: staffing, food costs, wages, and the wear of seven-day weeks. DeWolf talked about community fundraisers that used the room for years, from youth foundations to local nonprofits that needed a downtown table. Former staff remembered learning service there as teenagers. That is the civic part people put next to the menus.

The restaurant also carried Helena experiments that later felt normal: an early wine focus, patio seating that required ordinance work, and distinct rooms for different nights. Billings and Great Falls sister locations were already gone by 2022. Helena was the last Bert and Ernie’s.

Plans discussed at closing pointed toward a meat-market reuse of the building by ranch families organizing as Old Salt Co-op. Whether that project landed cleanly is a separate VERIFY for a later update. The restaurant chapter itself ended in December 2022.

Downtown Helena still has places to eat. It does not have Bert and Ernie’s. That distinction matters to people who measured weeks by which room they sat in.
