The Story
Summer melodrama and vaudeville at the Virginia City Opera House. The 78th season ran in 2026, with the University of Montana Western producing.
The Virginia City Players do turn-of-the-century melodrama and vaudeville in the Virginia City Opera House. They’ll tell you it’s the longest continually running summer stock theatre west of the Mississippi. That’s a lot of summers.
In March 2026 the University of Montana Western said it would produce the 78th season, under an agreement with the Montana Heritage Commission. Stephen Alan Seder, a returning player who trained under Bill Koch and the Koch family, is artistic director.
The 2026 bill: The Bat!, June 17 to July 19. Vaudeville’s Greatest Hits, July 24 to August 2. Xantippe!, August 5 to September 6. Adult tickets were $30. The exclamation points came at no extra charge.
Go next summer. The exclamation points are worth it.
Why It's Still Old School
Turn-of-the-century melodrama in a ghost-town opera house, 78 summers running. This is summer stock that never got the memo about stopping.
