Still Old School
The Western Cafe
Bozeman changed fast. The chicken fried steak didn't.
The Story
Bozeman's longest-running restaurant, on East Main since 1933. Scratch breakfast and lunch at the counter, local eggs, and no laptops required. Or wanted.
The Western Cafe is Bozeman’s longest-running restaurant. The building on East Main has been serving meals since 1933, maybe longer, under a string of earlier names: The Eat a Bite, the Nickel Lunch, and the Cottage Cafe. Somebody had fun with those.
Sue Sabena took over in 2008 with her daughter, Julie Gandulla. The cooking is from scratch and the eggs are local. The regular orders are chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy, which tells you most of what you need to know.
Phones and laptops are not really the point of the room. Bozeman changed fast around it, and the Western kept doing breakfast.
Take a stool at the counter. The laptop can wait in the truck.
Why It's Still Old School
Counter breakfast on East Main since 1933, cooked from scratch. Bozeman changed fast around it. The chicken fried steak didn't.
