Still Old School
The Pollard Hotel
Still renting rooms by the night instead of going condo.
The Story
Red Lodge's first brick hotel, built in 1893 as the Spofford and renamed the Pollard in 1902. Still renting rooms on Broadway, with a restaurant serving daytime meals.
Red Lodge’s first brick hotel went up in 1893 as the Spofford. Thomas F. Pollard bought it in 1902, put his name on it, and added rooms and public space. It still operates on North Broadway.
Pollard’s daughter Barbara wrote the hotel’s story as a letter, and she didn’t tidy it up. She’s frank about early-1900s lodge life and about the family’s exit in the 1940s. Frank enough that you may want to read it before you check in, not after.
These days it’s simpler: a hotel in the middle of town, and a restaurant serving daytime meals.
