Still Old School

Spa Hot Springs Motel

White Sulphur Springs, Montana

Baths were once 75 cents. Whiskey was extra.

The Story

Motel and three hot pools on Main Street in White Sulphur Springs, on springs first developed as a bathhouse by 1872.

James Brewer had a bathhouse at these springs by 1872: three bathrooms and a 12-by-12 plunge. Baths were 75 cents. Whiskey was extra. He called the place Brewer’s Springs. Dr. William Parberry later bought it and renamed it White Sulphur Springs.

Gene Gudmundson, a chiropractor who grew up in Miles City, stayed at the motel in 1988 while he was looking for a place to practice, and bought it within a couple of months. Some guests leave a review. Gene bought the place. He and his wife Annie were still running it in December 2022.

There are three pools, between 100 and 105 degrees, plus motel rooms and cabins. “We drain our pools every single night,” Annie Gudmundson said.

Bring a towel and stay in until your fingers prune.
