Still Old School
Sacajawea Hotel
The porch does most of the work.
The Story
Three Forks railroad hotel from 1910, open year-round with rooms, bars, Pompey's Grill, and a front porch that does most of the work.
John Q. Adams of the Milwaukee Railroad built the Sacajawea in 1910 as a rest stop for passengers and crews. Bozeman architect Fred Willson designed the addition around the older Madison House, which had been moved to the site. Yes, moved. The whole house.
It still stands on North Main in Three Forks. A 2010 refurbishment put modern rooms inside the historic shell. It’s a Historic Hotels of America member, stays open year-round, and has dining and bars on site, Pompey’s Grill among them.
It’s a working small-town hotel, and the porch is for sitting. Pictures optional.
Pull a chair up on the porch and let Three Forks go by for a while.
Why It's Still Old School
White clapboard and a front porch at the Missouri headwaters since 1910. Built for the railroad. Still keeping the porch light on.
