Still Old School

Murray Hotel

Livingston, Montana · Since 1904

Most people buy naming rights. The Murrays foreclosed.

The Story

Livingston's downtown railroad hotel since 1904. There are 25 rooms and suites above Park Street, and the Murray Bar is right off the lobby.

The Murray goes back to 1904, in the middle of downtown Livingston, when the railroad still set the town’s week. It opened as the Elite Hotel.

The name change is the good part. The Butte family of Senator James E. Murray had financed an expansion, and in 1925 they foreclosed on the owner. The hotel took the Murray name. Most people buy naming rights. The Murrays went the paperwork route.

There are 25 rooms and suites on Park Street now, and the lobby opens onto dining and the Murray Bar. Inside it’s modern comfort in a working historic shell. Nobody gutted the railroad bones.

Why It's Still Old School

It opened in 1904 as the Elite. In 1925 the family that had financed an expansion foreclosed, and the Murray name went up. That's one way to name a hotel.
