Still Old School

Discovery Ski Area

Philipsburg, Montana · Since 1974

Everybody calls it Disco. With a straight face.

The Story

Ski hill in the Flint Creek Range above Georgetown Lake, opened in 1974 as Discovery Basin. Around Philipsburg and Anaconda, everybody just calls it Disco.

Discovery opened in 1974 as Discovery Basin, with a few runs and a rope tow. Investors from Spokane and local skiers looking for something bigger than nearby Wraith Hill developed it. Peter Pitcher bought it at an SBA auction in June 1984 and added seven chairlifts over the next 25 years.

The front side is wide groomers. The backside is steep chutes and bowls. Choose wisely. From the top you can see the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness and Georgetown Lake, which helps on the days your legs need a minute.

Locals call it Disco. Lift tickets are kept modest on purpose. Old school pricing, by design.

Skied it in the rope tow days? Tell us what it was like before the chairs showed up.

Why It's Still Old School

Started with a rope tow in 1974. Lift tickets are still kept modest on purpose, and people still call it Disco with a straight face.
