Still Old School
Club Moderne
America's favorite historic bar, briefly on fire.
The Story
Streamline Moderne corner bar on Park Avenue in Anaconda since 1937. It burned in 2016, reopened in 2017, and still pours every day.
Club Moderne went up in 1937 for John Francisco. Fred F. Willson designed it, Frank Wullus built it, and the front was clad in Carrara glass. The inside was custom-built to match. Anaconda in 1937 did not do things halfway.
In 2016 it won a National Trust for Historic Preservation contest as America’s favorite historic bar. A few months later, on October 3, 2016, fire badly damaged the building. Rough timing.
The owners rebuilt. They kept the bar, a few original furnishings and some of the original facade, and reopened to the public on May 13, 2017.
It’s still a neighborhood bar. In May 2026 it hosted a “Just for Fun” car show, which is about as neighborhood as it gets.
Have a drink at the bar that made it through. If you knew it before the fire, tell us what it was like.

Why It's Still Old School
Carrara glass out front since 1937. It was named America's favorite historic bar in 2016, burned a few months later, and came back with the same bar.
