The Windbag opened as a saloon and grill in 1977 on Last Chance Gulch, according to the business and regional writeups that track Helena’s downtown timeline. The building itself is older. Southwest Montana and Bozeman Daily Chronicle features have described earlier uses that include theater and other downtown lives before the Windbag name.
Visit Montana still lists it as an operating bar and grill at 19 South Last Chance Gulch. Weekend brunch and a full bar keep the room in weekday and weekend rotation.
It is not the oldest business in the building. It is a long-running Helena bar that people still use. If you are nearby, stop in and keep them busy.
