Details

Why it's still old school
The way the Snag tells it, the bar has been in this 1901 building the whole time. Original back bar, original tin ceiling, never restored to look old. Nobody ever got around to tearing it out.

The Snag Bar sits on Broadway in downtown Red Lodge, at the town end of the Beartooth Highway and six miles from Red Lodge Mountain. Coming off the hill or down off the pass, you drive right past it. You don’t have to.

The way the Snag tells it, the building went up in 1901 and the bar has been in it ever since. The back bar is the original. So is the pressed tin ceiling. None of it is a reproduction. Leaving good things alone is a preservation plan of its own.

The food is bar food done straight: half pound burgers, an Original Pork Chop John sandwich, and a fryer that handles the rest. There’s a patio out back for the two good months.

Order the burger. Then look up at the ceiling and do the math on 1901.

The Old Saloon

Abe Armstrong's 1907 back bar is still in use. Prohibition closed the saloon, and it didn't reopen legally until St. Patrick's Day 1962, under his son Elmer. Ranch hands and Yellowstone traffic still end up at the same bar.
