Montana Story
Growing Up in Montana in the '90s
Gym lights, mall Saturdays, and a radio that went to static between towns. The ordinary decade a lot of Montanans still mean.
Nobody needs a generation label for it. If you grew up in Montana in the 1990s, you can still feel the week in your hands.
School was the calendar. Friday was the gym or the field, under lights that were never as good as the brochure version of Friday Night Lights and better for it. Saturday might be a mall if you lived near Billings, Great Falls, or Missoula, or a Main Street loop if you did not. Sunday was homework, church for some, and a highway home from whoever’s grandparents lived two hours away.
Cars mattered because distance mattered. You learned the exits that had a cafe still open. You learned which stretch of road killed the radio. You learned that winter could cancel school or just make the parking lot a lesson. None of that requires inventing a specific high school or inventing a specific storm. It was the shared weather of the decade.
Phones were on kitchen walls longer than people admit. Computer labs existed, then mattered more. MTV and country radio argued in the same truck. The interstate felt farther than it does now because you were not watching the route on a screen. A road trip was a list of towns, not a list of pins.
This is a franchise story built from general, checkable patterns of 1990s Montana life, not from one town’s unpublished diary. If your version had a different mall, a different gym, or a different cafe that timed the drive, that is the point of the comments.
Remember this decade? Tell us what you remember without turning it into a speech. The ordinary details are the ones that hold.
The details that matter are the ones neighbors can correct in the comments.
