Still Old School
Bernice's Bakery
Four owners, all women, and the ovens still on early.
The Story
Scratch bakery on South 3rd in Missoula since 1978. Cakes, cupcakes, pies, pastries and lunch, with the lights on before the rest of town finds its keys.
Bernice’s has been feeding Missoula since 1978, and it still opens early enough to count as a public service around here.
Missy Kelleher runs it now. She’s the fourth woman to own the place, which makes Bernice’s a pretty good argument for leaving things in good hands. She has kept the standards that made it a local stop while the town changed around it.
The work is bakery work done the long way: cakes, cupcakes, pies and pastries from scratch, plus a lunch menu. People use that counter on ordinary weekdays as much as for birthday cakes. Forty-plus years of birthday cakes adds up to a lot of candles.
Don’t leave the cake until the last minute. Got a Bernice’s birthday story? Send it in.

Remember This? The Merc, The Bon, and the Drugstore That Outlasted Both
The Missoula Mercantile sold wagons, groceries and furniture, then became The Bon, then Macy's. The lights went out in 2010. Somehow the old pharmacy corner made it.

Still Old School: The Oxford Cafe Never Got Around to Locking Up
On the corner of Higgins and Pine since 1883, and it doesn't close. Still pouring coffee and plating chicken fried steak with JJ's gravy long after downtown locks up.
